The Department of Applied Aquaculture and Zoology is one of the leading departments of Barkatullah University, Bhopal. It offers M.Sc. Zoology, M.Phil. Zoology and M.F.Sc. Applied Aquaculture. The department also intends to start M.Phil. Fisheries Science from the upcoming academic session. It conducts Ph.D. programmes in diverse fields such as finfish and shellfish biodiversity, ecology, reproductive biology, endocrinology, neurosecretory system, seed production technology, grow-out trials, nutrition, feed formulation, health management and aquatic toxicology. The Department has completed 10 major international and national research projects, produced 32 Ph.D. scholars, and published around 175 research papers in reputed Indian and international journals. It has collaborations with several national and international institutes where students are sent for dissertation work. The Department attracts students from across the country and holds a national reputation.
The Department has highly qualified faculty members who provide excellent instruction and practical training. It has the largest campus area within the University and possesses significant aquaculture infrastructure such as Chinese hatchery, freshwater prawn hatchery, indoor and outdoor magur hatcheries, artificial pearl culture unit, aquaria manufacturing and ornamental fish breeding unit, rooftop rainwater harvesting system, flow-through aquaculture system, dry bundh, Bangala bundh, broodstock tanks, nursery tanks, rearing tanks and stocking tanks. Besides teaching and training, the Department is engaged in seed production of finfish and shellfish, rearing them to market size, manufacturing aquaria, breeding ornamental fishes, and providing consultancy and training to various institutions and organizations.
Employment opportunities for students exist in the fields of animal science, environmental science, biodiversity, aquaculture and fisheries—covering training, research, development, extension, administration and industry. Recruiting agencies include universities, state and central fisheries departments, research institutes, fisheries corporations, co-operatives and private industries involved in seed production, feed formulation, fish processing, equipment manufacturing and related sectors. Students receive practical, industry-oriented training and can also establish their own ventures.
